Eastwatch

Fire & Blood

Eastwatch is a northern destination in the histories of both the Night’s Watch and Westerosi seafaring. The surviving references place it at the intersection of two very different journeys: the return of a deserter’s head and an exploratory voyage aboard the Ice Wolf.

The Night’s Watch and the Deserters

After rebels from the Night’s Watch fled beyond the Wall, the wildlings rejected them. Ser Raymund Mallery’s head was delivered to Eastwatch half a year later. The account gives no further detail about who brought it, but the delivery makes Eastwatch a point at which news of the deserters’ fate reached the Watch.

A Northern Maritime Destination

Eastwatch also appears on Corlys Velaryon’s route aboard the Ice Wolf. Sailing north from Braavos, he visited Eastwatch and Hardhome before turning into the Shivering Sea toward Lorath and the Port of Ibben. The itinerary places Eastwatch among the stops of a voyage that extended from Westeros’s northern coast into colder, less familiar waters.

A Point of Connection

The two references show Eastwatch in distinct roles without describing its buildings or daily life. In the Night’s Watch account it is the endpoint for a grim report from beyond the Wall; in Corlys’s account it is a waypoint in a far-reaching sea journey. Together, these mentions establish its narrative significance through the routes that lead to it and the information carried there.
